Food Services Department

This year has been like a whirl wind. It is really hard to believe that it’s Annual Report time. Each day brings new challenges and goals for the clients and staff in the Food Service Department. There is never a dull moment.
The Baking Department has added new products to its present list. We now make delicious home made pies, spider cookies, and offer a variety of squares by the dozen. Date squares have been added to our Diabetic Line. We have been researching cost of supplies, always trying to find ways to reduce cost.
Our Catering Department has been kept quite busy with steady bookings since April. We hosted Weddings, Anniversary Parties, Dances and even a Jack and Jill shower. The response from customers is always positive with plenty of compliments on our food and service. The Lasagna Supper held last fall was a great success. We sold over 1000 dinners. The profits from this event were used to purchase chairs and trolleys for Food Services. Due to rising costs, our a la carte menu realized a slight increase in pricing. Fortunately, the demand for our products has not decreased. This, in itself, speaks of our high quality and customer satisfaction.
Four clients have completed work experience placements at the Citizenship kiosk. These placements, which occur for a period of 160 hours, afford clients with the opportunity to gain viable skills in the food service industry.
The Provincial Canteen program is in its third and final year of operation with twenty-five clients completing the training. Five graduates will be selected based on their past performance to participate in the second phase of this years program. This will include 26 weeks of concentrated skill development in such areas as managerial responsibilities, balancing finances, and placing orders.
The Maintenance department remains busy with the general upkeep of the building(s). A building of this size requires steady upkeep and repairs. This is accomplished through multiple projects throughout the year. This year a new sliding security door has been installed near the front offices.
A number of clients have secured full time/part time and contract employment this past year, thanks to the support of businesses like Tim Horton’s and Wendy’s. Many other clients have or are participating in work experience and volunteer opportunities at such places as the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, the Cove Guest Home, Loaves and Fishes, just to name a few. A sincere Thank You to all our business partners. The various placements have allowed new clients to attend the Centre for orientations in departments such as Maintenance and Baking. It is great to see new faces mingled with the “old faithful ones”.
In November of 2003, a craft show was held at the Centre in conjunction with Crafts - O - Plenty. This proved to be very successful and has lead to the organization of a second craft show to be held this November 19, 20 and 21 hosted by the Centre independently. Application for crafters are still available. Admission will be$1.00.
A sincere Thank You to all clients of the Food Services Department for their continued dedication and quality of service. To the staff, Richard, Bob, Joe, Donna, Kenny, Nadine, Sadie, Lisa and Mike, your commitment to this industry and service is second to none.

Lisa Reiley
Food Service Co-ordinator
